“From generated pixels on a screen to artwork, translating computer art to prints can give computer-produced visuals new life. This week, Christina Vassallo lets us know about her new series of silkscreened limited editions from two artists whose work in code (via Processing) we already know and love. [...] Just seeing that MacBook Pro and big buckets of color next to one another is a reminder that something special happens when you use the digital medium alongside traditional craft, when the continuity with art is restored.”

Paul Housberg Glass Design http://www.machinelake.com/2011/01/29/paul-housberg-glass-design/ http://www.machinelake.com/2011/01/29/paul-housberg-glass-design/#comments Sun, 30 Jan 2011 05:48:31 +0000 gavin http://www.machinelake.com/?p=87596790 Paul Housberg Glass Design Frick Chemistry Lab

“Stained glass has a few associations for us, namely: church and church. Also: church. Which makes what Paul Housberg does for a living nothing short of revolutionary: He takes the fusty old art of stained glass and updates it for hotels, offices, and universities — those sanctuaries of the modern world. The resulting installations are giant, geometric arrays of colored glass that owe more to abstract art than to the windows of a 13th-century cathedral.”

The geometric aspect to his design is particularly appealing. Reminds me of an elegant evolution of the bitmap.

Float Cappuccino Cups http://www.machinelake.com/2011/01/20/float-cappuccino-cups/ http://www.machinelake.com/2011/01/20/float-cappuccino-cups/#comments Fri, 21 Jan 2011 04:20:38 +0000 gavin http://www.machinelake.com/?p=87596761 Float Cappuccino Cup

“The double-layered structure of the Float glassware series separates the bowl containing the liquid from the hand, keeping cold liquids from warming in the hand and hot liquids from scalding. Condensation is also elevated from the table surface, eliminating the need for coasters. All of the items are mouth-blown from borosilicate glass, an extremely pure and chemically inert glass which is heat resistant.”

Not sure if I’m just reacting to the geometric perfection of the photo but these are beautiful. Then again “borosilicate glass” is also pretty cool considering that’s the stuff they use for labware, beakers, etc. A pair of cups can be yours for $80.

“Written by Steven Heller and Elaine Lustig Cohen, the book details the many aspects of the life of Alvin Lustig including his work in both graphic and interior design, how he evolved as a designer, his interest in education and his passion for changing the world through his creations. The breadth of his understanding of design covered many mediums and from the very beginning of the book you begin to understand that every aspect of his career was intertwined.”

The Designer’s Review of Books gives a nice review to a fun book. If you’re a fan of Lustig and his decades of work, you’ll like this book.
